OVERVIEW OF THE PROGRAMME

The Post NAC/NAP Midwifery (Diploma) Programme is a two-year programme organized over four semesters with clinical attachment periods after semester. There is a two-month extension during which we roll out top us courses through our affiliation with the University of Capecoast to enable our graduates to be award a DIPLOMA in Midwifery

TThe goal of the programme is to produce a polyvalent midwife who will practice midwifery in any part of the country, sub-region and globally.

The student midwife will acquire knowledge, skills and attitudes to recognize the total reproductive health needs of individuals, families and communities and participate effectively in meeting those needs.

The programme trains nurses assistants who desire a change in professional line to become professional Midwives to care for pregnant, laboring and lactating women and their babies. The training follows the standards established by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana

ADMISSION

This programme only admits candidates who already have some basic training in Nurse Assistant Clinical or Nurse Assistant Preventive. Check in the admissions page for more details on the Entry Requirements for Post Basic Applicants.

PROGESSION

Each course, with the exception of a project, shall normally be completed in one semester. A final (end-of-semester) examination shall normally be required as a part of every course. An examination schedule for each course shall be published each semester. The marks obtained in the end-of-semester examination shall contribute 70% of the grade for the course while continuous assessment contributes the remaining 30% (except for practicals or other courses which are assessed entirely by continuous assessment) A student is deemed to be in good standing if He/She obtains a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of at least 1.50.

GRADUATION

A student is qualified to be graduated if she satisfies all of the following requirements;

  • Passed all required courses
  • Achieved a minimum of 45 credit hours
  • Obtained a FCGPA of 1.5 or above
  • Satisfied all other requirements of the college board

LICENSING EXAMINATION

Upon graduation, students will be required to register and take the Registered Midwifery Licensing Examination which is organized by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Ghana. The examination is structured into the following components;

  • Practical Nursing/Midwifery
  • Viva voce for patient care study
  • Online Examination -Multiple Choice Questions

Students who pass the licensing examination are registered with the council and provided with a license and professional identification number to enable them practice midwifery in Ghana.

EMPLOYMENT

As a government Institution, employment within the public sector is almost guaranteed for our graduates where they are recruited directly into the Ghana Health Service and posted to health facilities across the country.

Generally, our graduates can work in the following areas;

  • Clinics/Hospitals (Midwife-Maternity Health Care Assistant/delivery suit manager).
  • Private Maternity Homes and Hospitals (Midwife – Consultant).
  • Health Training Institution (Midwifery Preceptor).
  • NGOs in Health (Midwife – Maternity support worker).
